Demystifying powder coating over welds

If you weld parts and then powder coat over them, you may have had some problems with adhesion. You’re not alone. From the number of questions we receive on this topic, many coaters have experienced this problem. This article discusses the most common types of welding methods and explains how to promote adhesion in a few simple steps. One thing to keep in mind, you won’t find any shortcuts to handling the problem.

Welding unites pieces of metal or plastic by heating until molten and fused or until soft enough to hammer or press together1. What has this to do with powder coating, and why is this topic in a finishing magazine? Because welding affects the powder finish and the coating performance, and because we are frequently asked why powder coating doesn’t adhere in the relatively close area of a welded junction.
