Not all water is blue

Municipal water supplies throughout the US differ dramatically, containing naturally occurring contaminants. Unless these contaminants are removed from the water used to pretreat powder-coated parts, they will cause considerable effects on coating performance and certain mechanical problems with the washer. This article discusses 'what's in the water,’ effects of impure source water on washer performance and coating performance, and methods to purify the source water used in your washer.

A powder coating line technician at a powder coating company in Green Bay, Wis., begins his work day by inspecting rejected parts. The problem was soon evident: Large white spots (scale) were occurring on the part surface as it came out of the dry-off oven. The reason? The source water, which is used for final rinsing of the parts, has more than 500 milligrams per liter (mg/L) concentration of total dissolved solids (TDS).
