Thermoplastics: Polyamide 11 powder coatings explained
Polyamide-11 powder coatings have been used worldwide for more than 40 years in demanding applications such as water handling, automobiles, oil transport, and appliances. This article discusses this polyamide powder coating technology with emphasis on the relation between performance and end-use application.
Unlike most polymers, polyamide-11 (PA-11) doesn’t originate from petroleum, but rather a renewable resource—the castor-oil plant1. From castor oil is produced the monomer known as 11-aminoundecanoic acid, which by simple polycondensation reaction is converted to PA-11. As a result, these powder coatings are truly green products.
