Parameters affecting the optical performance of powder coatings

This article discusses a theoretical study of how pigment concentration, maximum powder particle size, and film thickness affect the optical performance of powder coatings.

Results show that the best film performance is achieved at film thicknesses of 1.6 to 2 mils. The film performance can be improved further by reducing the maximum powder particle size. Note that it would be unrealistic to sieve powders through such fine meshes as used in this study. In reality, the powders would be passed through the extruder or mill again.
