Achieving a low-gloss finish with epoxy-polyester hybrid powders

Although sparkling, gleaming surfaces may appear to be the most attractive finishes, shine-free, flat surfaces also serve useful coating purposes. This article focuses on lowgloss powder coating finishes attained with a variety of chemistries. The article discusses reactive agents, formulations, and guidelines for formulating low-gloss, hybrid powder coatings. The article also explains gloss.

The chemical and physical properties of most classes of powder coatings cure to give a level, glossy surface. However, for aesthetic and functional reasons, it's often desirable to have a powdercoated surface with a low-gloss, or matte finish. For example, a low-gloss finish reduces sun glare in automotive interiors, hides scratches or fingerprints on consumer appliances, and softens the appearance of decorative objects.
