Appliance pretreatment: an evolving process

In the 1970s appliance manufacturers begab switching to powder coatings from porcelain enamel on steel

This meant a change in pretreatment from the traditional pickling method to an iron- or zinc-phosphate conversion coating and a chrome seal. This article looks at the history of those changes. It also discusses why powder and its accompanying pretreatment system are beneficial to appliance manufacturers and consumers of their products. The evolution of the home appliance pretreatment system also is explored.
