Three million Chrysler and GM vehicles were coated with a powder primer in 1999. Compare that with a few powder-primed vehicles in 1994, a year after the formation of the Low Emissions Paint Consortium [LEPC], a group that works under the auspices of the United States Council for Automotive Research [USCAR].
But despite its success in promoting powder as a primer coat on vehicles, the LEPC has run into some roadblocks in its attempts to devise a powder clearcoat that will meet the automotive industry's stringent standards.
