In 1989, Abbey Finishing Corporation, a Chicago-based custom job shop, was faced with a dilemma common to many liquid finishing operations: On the one hand, because of increasingly aggressive competition Abbey needed to expand it's operation and productivity. On the one hand, it couldn't afford to expand because it would then exceed it's VOC limit and run foul of air quality regulations.
