Fences, gates, guard rails, hand rails, and stair rails: Design, manufacturing, and finishing concerns
The purpose of this article is to address a growing problem that exists in our industry that is adversely affecting the reputation that powder coating job shops and powder material suppliers are getting as the result of a failure by project planners to properly address critical design and finishing issues for major architectural fence and railing projects.
Powder coating fences, gates, guard rails, hand rails, stair rails, and component accessories for exterior use in an outdoor weather environment where moisture is often present poses some significant design, manufacturing, and finishing challenges when long-term corrosion resistance and decorative appearance is expected. The purpose of any organic finishing process is to provide both decorative value (to make the product look good) and protective value (to prevent corrosion). These products have become particularly problematic in terms of achieving both decorative and protective values when the products are exposed to sun and wet weather environments.
