Powder Coating 2004 overall message stresses new markets for growth

With attendance numbers slipping and industry growth down, the Powder Coating Institute opens its biennial show eyeing new markets and showcasing new technology to increase efficiency.

At a recent meeting of investors, Sally Anderson, executive vice president and a senior portfolio manager at Minnesota-based Kopp Investment Advisors, told the group: “People don’t realize what bad shape we were in during the ’70s and ’80s. The ’90s were a big turnaround in technology and production, even though the past 4 years have been down.” Even so, she described these past 4 years as the “granddaddy of all bear markets.” What do you do? You don’t simply sit back and ride it out, she said. Instead, you look for other opportunities for gain.

The powder coating industry has to do the same. This message resonated throughout Powder Coating 2004, the Powder Coating Institute’s biennial exhibition and conference, held recently in Charlotte, N.C. The boom of the ’90s, which produced record numbers of liquid-to-powder conversions, has been followed by a “fizzle.” And we’re not even half way through the first decade.
