UV-durability of appliance powder coatings: Chemistry makes a difference

This article discusses color retention concerns for appliances in some areas of the world and how product appearance affects consumer buying decisions. It explains the importance of ultraviolet [UV] resistance not only for appliances used outdoors, such as air conditioners, but also for appliances used indoors, such as refrigerators.

The article also describes some common test methods used to assess UV durability in appliance coatings. It also concludes with a comparison of the most common powder coating chemistries used in the appliance industry. In Brazil, home appliances are typically finished in bright colors and are used in white-tiled kitchens with a lot of windows. However, many of the red refrigerators turn partially orange and the brown dish-washers fade to yellow from exposure to ultraviolet
