Effective air-blow-off applications in powder coating

This article discusses the principle and design of airblow-off application for cleaning and drying parts before powder coating. It describes degrees of drying requirements and why air-blow-off technology increases efficiency and saves in overall operational costs.

Most powder coating systems require aqueous applications in which drying is an absolutely critical element in the cleaning and finishing system. Unfortunately, rinsing and blowing off of parts is a weak area in many powder coating operations. Two things happen when this area is neglected or functioning improperly:

  1. The line is slowed down because of blow-off inefficiency. This is where determining proper air exit velocity is critical.
  2. The number of rejects increases, which means items need to go back through the line.

A plant operator can realize a return on investment in a time frame of days, not weeks or months, by properly using air blow-off.
